CPSC, Lexington Furniture Announce Recall of Wooden Bunk Beds WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lexington Furniture Industries of Lexington, N.C., is recalling about 58,000 wooden bunk beds. If the top bunk bed is mis-assembled, there could be a space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed on the top bunk. This space could be large enough for a child's body to fall through, but small enough to entrap a child's head. Lexington Furniture has received one report of a child falling through the space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed when set up as a twin bed. No injury was reported. To determine whether there is a space large enough to entrap a child, consumers should slide the mattress to either end of the top bunk and measure the space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed. There should be no space of 3-1/2 inches or more between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed. The recalled bunk beds are twin size with the following brand names: Lexington, Devan, Young-Hinkle, Dixie and Henry Link. In most cases the brand names are stenciled on the inside frame of the bed. In a few instances, the following model names and numbers appear on the inside frame of the bed: Model Name Model Numbers Academy 418-193, 418-195, 429-193, 429-195 Americana 548-180 American Mix 400-199 Betsy Cameron's Children 111-195, 222-195 Charter Oak 730-181, 730-187, 730-199 Chardonnay 818-181 De Cristofaro 411-199 Euroline 444-180 Eurostyle 106-199, 207-199 Habitat 142-181 Kids Retreat 225-199, 336-199 Lifestyle Maple 555-180, 555-181, 555-195 Locker Room 579-181, 579-199, 680-181, 680-199 Marina Oak 178-181, 178-193, 178-195, 178-199, 289-181, 289-193, 289-199, 399-193, 399-195 Newport 315-180, 315-199 Outrigger 950-181, 950-187, 950-199 Passport 224-181, 224-187, 224-199 Port O'Call 446-187 Recollections 387-180, 468-180, 468-181 Simplicity 714-199 Scova 904-199 Victoriana 610-181 Victorian Sampler 391-181 Windsor 606-181 Windjammer 194-180, 194-181, 194-187, 194-199 Windjammer II 295-181, 295-199 Windsor Collection 202-181, 303-181 Complements of Lexington 500-195, 590-195 Complements of Lexington Oak 580-195 Complements of Lexington Maple 560-195 Complements of Lexington Mission 540-195 The beds were sold in furniture stores and department stores with furniture departments nationwide from January 1980 through August 1997 for approximately $200 to $1,200. Affected Toro replacement power packs are 118-48, 118-DT, 118-IR, 160-IR, 52945, 52998, 52999, 52925, and 52927. Certain Lunalite original power packs rated at 108 or 118 watts distributed in 1986 and 1987 are affected. PROBLEM: Corrosion of the cable connectors could cause overheating and melting of the wire insulation, possibly resulting in a short-circuit and fire. WHAT TO DO: Toro is offering owners of affected products a repair kit. For more information, call 1-800-321-8676. WASHINGTON, DC -- CPSC, the Toro Company of Bloomington, MN today announced a repair program for the cable connectors of approximately 25,000 Toro and Lunalite brand outdoor lighting system 12-volt power packs. Toro found that corrosion of these cable connectors could cause overheating and melting of the wire insulation, possibly resulting in a short circuit and a fire if combustible materials were nearby. Toro informed CPSC of 26 overheating or fire incidents that were reported to the company by April 1992. None of these reported incidents resulted in injury. The repair program includes the following nine Toro replacement power pack models distributed since January 1988: 118-48, 118-DT, 118-IR, 160-IR, 52945, 52998, 52999, 52925, and 52927. Toro original equipment is not affected. Also involved are certain Lunalite original power packs rated at 108 or 118 watts distributed in 1986 and 1987. These Lunalite power packs have a wiring connector located between the power pack and the first light. The Toro and Lunalite brand power packs were sold nationwide by a variety of retailers and Toro for $35 to $45. Each power pack is designed to be installed on the outside wall of a house or garage near an electrical receptacle. The cable and one or more cable connectors for the outdoor lights are located below the power pack and on the ground. Owners can identify potentially defective cable connectors by checking the back of the Toro replacement power pack for one of the above listed model numbers, or for the Lunalite brand name on the front of the original power pack with the 108 or 118 watt rating on the back and a wiring connector between the power pack and the first light. Consumers with affected units should call Toro at 1-800-321-8676. Toro will send owners installation instructions and a repair kit. For questions about installation, owners may call Toro at 1-612-887-7399. Owners should disregard this notice if they have already replaced their cable connectors with a Toro repair kit. CPSC is announcing this repair program as part of its mission to protect the public from the unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission is aware of 2 complaints of lacerations and contusions of the face resulting from children falling from these Parkcycles and approximately 30 reports of front fork failure that did not involve injury. All but one of these incidents were brought to CPSC's attention by Columbia. Prior tolerating of any fork failures, Columbia's internal testing program indicated that it would be desirable to strengthen the Parkcycle front forks and Columbia commenced using a heavier gauge steel for the front forks on all Parkcycle production as of November 1, 1983. Because of an inspection and replacement program conducted by Columbia, all Parkcycles sold after February 9, 1994, already have the strengthened front fork. Replacement forks are still being offered free of charge to all owners of Columbia Parkcycles purchased prior to February 8, 1984, and consumers are encouraged to participate in this program. The affected units are 16-inch children's bicycles identified as the boys' \"X2 Tiger\", Model No. 2122, and the girls' \"Rainbow Connection\", Model No. 2121. The Parkcycles were distributed nationally and retailed for approximately $75.00. PARKCYCLES PURCHASED AFTER FEBRUARY 8, 1984 ARE NOT AFFECTED. This announcement is being issued as a supplement to the program initiated by Columbia in March 1984 through and with the cooperation of its major retail accounts. Over 9,600 Parkcycle front forks have been replaced, and this announcement is intended to inform again those purchasers who have not had their Parkcycles repaired how to obtain a replacement fork. If your X2 Tiger or Rainbow Connection Parkcycle has a serial number at the rear of the Parkcycle beginning 3212 or lower, and you have not yet obtained a replacement fork, you should do so at once. You may ask your retailer for a new fork and easy assembly instructions or ask your retailer for a preaddressed postcard and Columbia will ship the new fork and instructions directly to you. Consumers may also write to Customer Service, Columbia Manufacturing Company, 1 Cycle Street, Westfield, MA 01086. Please specify whether your Parkcycle is the Model 2122 (black) or model 2121 (pink). Brass Craft has already received approximately 77,000 units. The non displaceable rotor gas valves being recalled were manufactured between November, 1980 and July, 1981. They were distributed after January 1, 1981 to a variety of original equipment manufacturers, wholesale hardware/plumbing distributors and retailers for consumer use in connecting gas appliances such as stoves or furnaces where a straight pipe connection does not exist. There have been no reports of failure or injuries associated with the use of the valves. The recall pertains to Brass Craft non displaceable rotor gas valves identified as: GFNDI - E4 GFNDI -H6 GFNDI - G4 MGFNDI - H6 or attached to connectors identified as: SC2E (all lengths) SC3E (all lengths) SC4E (all lengths) SClE (all lengths) SD7L (all lengths) MSC4E (all lengths) SD4L (all lengths) SC5E (all lengths) SL4L (all lengths) SL7L (all lengths) These valves are easily identified by a pyramid sign and the letters BC embossed on each handle. (April 22, 1980) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced the recall of more than one-half million hair dryers and styling combs which were manufactured with asbestos. The recall includes professional hand-held hair dryers sold for use in barber shops and hair salons. The recalls are being conducted voluntarily by the Andis Company, of Racine, Wisconsin, and by National Presto Industries, Inc., of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Under voluntary corrective programs approved by the Commission, the two firms have agreed to replace the asbestos linings in the dryers and stylers with non-asbestos materials. The Andis Company is recalling tens of thousands of hand-held dryers sold to professional barbers and beauticians since 1973. Some salons may have resold the dryers directly to consumers, CPSC staff reports.
