Maytag/Jenn-Air Dual-fuel oven/range

Manufacturer: Maytag Appliances
Model: JDR8895AAS
Serial No.: 13411627GP

Appliance was purchased in late 2005. Appliance has had many minor problems, such as control knobs breaking off. Approximately two years ago, the right front igniter on the range stopped working. Every time I use the top broiler, an "electrical" smell emits from the appliance for approximately a day. The plastic seals around the glass on bottom oven door appear to have melted over time.

On November 9, 2011. I was simmering some taco meat and using the oven at 350 degrees. Spontaneously, the igniters began rapidly clicking (approximately two times per second).

After about 2 minutes of clicking, I heard a loud pop and sparks flew out of the back of the range, near the top. Thirty seconds later, another loud pop and shower of sparks occurred. Thirty seconds after that, a third loud pop and sparking occurred.

After that, the igniters continued clicking, but a much slower rate (approximately once per second).

At that point, I turned off the appliance's circuit on my circuit breaker.

This seems to be a well-known problem that has resulted in more than a few kitchen fires, as I have found several consumer reviews detailing the same or similar problems:
