Art Van Furniture
I bought a bed for my 8 year old daughter through Art Van Furniture in Warren Michigan. The bed was made by Legacy Classic Furniture and was delivered on March 8, 2012. The next day my three kids and a friend were playing underneath the bed. The kids evidently pushed up on the mattress and the bed collapsed on them. The cause of the collapse was due to the design of the bed. The boards that connect the headboard and the footboard simply clip into position and depend on the weight of the mattress to hold everything together. There are no screws or safety catches to prevent the bed from collapsing if the mattress is lifted up from underneath. I understand that a bed is not a play structure, but kids are kids and love to climb underneath things. When they pushed up on the mattress, the footboard became disconnected from the bed and the wooden frame snapped off of the headboard and fell onto the children. Although the kids were unharmed, they were very frightened.

I looked at our other beds in the house and saw that one of them used the same type of clip-in construction, but added screw-on angle brackets in each corner to prevent this problem. Our other child bed has the sideboards screwed on which also prevent this problem. I do not understand how such an inherently dangerous design can be sold when the problem can be easily and inexpensively solved by adding simple corner brackets or retaining clips. I took pictures of the collapsed bed if you need them. Thank you for your time. [REDACTED]
I also sent this to another section of your website as I did not see this area to report the problem.

I contacted the store that I bought it from. They said this type of construction is standard in the industry.

We regret the consumer’s experience with our product, but we are glad that no one was seriously hurt in this accident. We take these matters very seriously, and we appreciate the opportunity to have discussed the matter directly with the consumer in order to get a better understanding of the situation. Legacy Classic Kids furniture is independently tested by CPSC approved third party testing labs to ensure it is in compliance with all applicable federal product standards and many voluntary ASTM standards, and we actively look for ways we can continuously improve. Safety concerns are especially important and our design and engineering teams will review this product based on this feedback. Additionally, we will discuss this matter and with our colleagues in the Juvenile Products Manf. Association (JPMA) and the American Home Furnishings Association (AHFA), both of which groups we are actively involved.
