SAFETY COMPLAINT
This complaint is in regards to two (2) Lane Evans Power Wall Recliners, Mocha color, item number 145720. They were purchased by me online from Boscov's on 06/21/13 for $448.00 each plus sales tax. The serial numbers are 020861410 and 020744554.

These chairs tilt forward when reclined. If the chair is reclined only a few inches and you lean forward at all, the chairs tip over frontward. They are very dangerous. I have had them unplugged so that my recliners will not recline. It defeats the purpose of reclining chairs, but I did this for what I thought would was be a temporary fix on my part. These chairs have been unplugged and unused since 2014.

I have been contacting Lane and filing this complaint via their online system since 04/14 to no avail. No one ever responded to me. I last contacted Lane via their online system in 01/16. Again, no one responded. I then contacted Lane by phone and talked to a Mr.
[REDACTED]. I explained the above. He told me he would assign me a case number and contact me via email.

These are the emails between Lane and me since I called them to get response.

MY COMPLAINT

The issue is that these recliners are very light weight in the front and are dangerous. If any weight is put on them when reclined, the whole chair tips forward. I have had them for years, never sit on them and have to keep them unplugged so they CAN'T recline. They look brand new. They can cause bodily harm and with a young child in the home, I cannot take the chance of him being injured. I have sent numerous emails over the years with no response whatsoever. Where these ever recalled ? Will someone please come and take these away ? Thank you very much.

LANE’ S RESPONSE

On Feb 12, 2016, at 12:44 PM,, [REDACTED] wrote:

Dear [REDACTED],

The mechanism (in a power or non-power unit) is designed so that the extended ottoman will support the weight of the user’s legs. When the user is sitting in the furniture in the reclined position, the load on the mechanism is evenly balanced. However, as the load applied to the front of the unit and the extended ottoman increases, the balance is disrupted - the ottoman acts as a lever, and the furniture can be tipped forward. This is the same principle as a seesaw.

The other issue with overloading the extended ottoman is potential product damage. The crossrail on the mechanism can be damaged if excessive force is applied. (FYI: Technically, if the mech is damaged by this action, it is improper use and is not covered under the warranty.)

All reclining furniture made by any manufacturer operates on the same principle. Some types of reclining furniture can feel as if they are more easily tipped forward when the ottoman is extended, such as gliders and rockers, due to the inherent movement of these types of furniture.

This is why we have included the attached CAUTION statement on the hangtags: DO NOT EXIT THE RECLINING FURNITURE UNIT UNTIL IT IS RETURNED TO THE CLOSED AND UPRIGHT POSITION and ALWAYS LEAVE OTTOMAN CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE.

Please see attachment for review of the warranty.

MY RESPONSE TO LANE

I have not yet been contacted by anyone. Please have someone contact me via
email at [REDACTED].
Thank you.

PHONE CONTACT FROM LANE
On 02/25/16, Ms. [REDACTED] from Lane (telephone number [REDACTED]) called and left a message for me to call her back.

On 3/1/16, I left Ms. [REDACTED] a message to call me back.

On 3/4/16 at 12:18 pm, Ms. [REDACTED] called and we spoke. She asked why I did not contact Boscov's. I told her I had called Boscov's years ago and they told me to call Lane. I asked if Lane could at least send someone to look at the chairs. [REDACTED] told me the chairs were no longer under warranty and if anyone were to come out, I would be responsible for paying for the technicians' fees and for any necessary labor. I don't see how a safety hazard has anything to do with a warranty. I told [REDACTED] that Lane has shown no interest in addressing this problem. I would think they would want to address and correct any safety issue brought to their attention. I told [REDACTED] how disappointed I was with Lane and that I would never purchase from them again. I told her that not only has Lane been ignoring me and/or been non-responsive since 2014, but has shown no interest in my issue. I told her I would be filing complaints. She thanked me.

*I found this recall from [REDACTED] which states the same tipping problem, However, the problem with my Lane chairs is worse. These chairs tip over if you lean forward while you are still sitting on them, and only reclined about 4-5 " from the floor.
