We have an LG over-the-range microwave - model LMV1683ST - manufactured in January 2013. Last night my two young children and I were trying to pop a bag of popcorn for a snack before bedtime. I placed the bag into the microwave and pressed the POPCORN button. Something we have done many times before. The microwave had been on for about one minute and the popcorn had just started popping when I noticed the microwave flashing orange with flames of fire. I immediately made my way to the microwave and pressed the STOP button. When I opened the door of the microwave there was some smoke inside and as the smoke cleared I noticed a hole in the top of the microwave that had been burned through. The smoke was from the melting plastic and the hole was about the size of a quarter dollar coin. I immediately stopped using the microwave and unplugged it from the wall outlet. I then monitored it with a fire extinguisher in hand for several minutes to be sure there was no additional fires. The microwave is now no longer usable. I contacted the manufacturer, LG, and was told that because my microwave was outside of the 1 year warranty period (even though it is less than 3 years old) they would not cover it. The cost to fix it is more than the microwave is worth brand new. So essentially because of a defective product - I also previously had issues with some numbers on the key pad working that LG would not fix - I am out several hundred dollars to buy a new microwave and get it delivered and installed. This product is very dangerous! I am just happy that I was home and in the kitchen when this occurred or the fire may have spread and this could be much worse.
