We bought a new home and moved in a week ago. The builder supplied the appliances that included a Sharp R-451ZS Carousel microwave. We used the microwave on 06/18/17 a couple of times and it worked fine. Then we tried to use it for microwave popcorn and pressed the popcorn button and about a minute in, it started making a strange noise and sparking and smoking. We turned it off and I notified the builder of the issue. They brought another microwave the next day 06/19/17 and sent an electrician out to check the outlets and they are fine. We used it once and it was fine, then tried using it for popcorn later that night and it started sparking and caught fire. I notified the builder again and they brought another one the next day 06/20/17. They tested it by making popcorn and it worked fine. Later that night, I tried to make some popcorn and it started sparking and caught fire. Three new Sharp R-451ZS Carousel microwaves have caught fire over the last three days while trying to make microwave popcorn.

Based on the information provided in this report, Sharp cannot determine what may have occurred without examining the units involved. The popcorn may have been overcooked due to an improper setting (user error) or there may be other factors involved. As indicated in the instruction manual, the oven should always be attended while popping popcorn.

If arcing does happen it is completely contained inside the oven cavity and will immediately cease when the cooking operation is stopped. This does not present a safety hazard for the user, but may result in damage to the oven cavity surfaces.

Customer satisfaction is a top priority for Sharp. We are making every effort to retrieve the units that were returned to the builder so they can be properly evaluated. This response can be updated when the results of that evaluation are available.

Sharp’s Customer Assistance Center representatives provide expert product support to their customers. Help is available 365 days a year 7am – 7pm Central Time Monday through Friday and 9am – 7pm Central Time Weekends and Holidays by calling Sharp at 1-800-BE-SHARP (1-800-237-4277).
