Our dishwasher's heating element never turned off after the cycle finished running. We came down to the smell of burning plastic. The silverware was beginning to melt the silverware container, a tupperware lid had completely melted and was in the drum of the dishwasher, across the heating element, plastic kids silverware was melted to the silverware container, other plastic dishes and cups were misshapen.

After we opened the door and ensured the cycle was done running, the heating element cooled down (after a long time). when we re-closed the door, without running the cycle, the heating element turned on again. I had to turn off the circuit breaker.

We were leaving on vacation the next day, and we were lucky we ran the dishwasher that night as we typically start the dishwasher as we leave the house. I am confident that had we run the dishwasher the next morning, our home would have suffered a major house fire.
