A small 18 inch under-cabinet fluorescent tube light fixture became excessively hot when a bulb began to burn out. The fixture was installed new, under cabinets in a garage approximately 2 years ago. The light was on nearly 24/7 as a work and ambient light. When the bulb started to fail, one side of the fixture became so hot that the plastic fixture surrounding the bulb warped, melted, and came in to contact with the bulb. The issue was discovered when a "hot plastic" smell was noticed and traced to the fixture. The plastic that was near to and in contact with the bulb turned dark brown and "bubbly" from the heat. When the bulb was removed, melted plastic from the fixture was stuck to the bulb. This poses a risk of fire, as the plastic could have ignited from heat and/or contact with the bulb, and internal wiring insulation could have melted and caused a short.
