The end of January 2019, my husband purchased a box of Great Value Automatic Dishwasher Powder Original Scent from Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 8000 Town Drive, Raleigh, NC 27616. He had purchased another box of the same product prior to that date and there were no problems with it. At first, my spouse and I did not detect anything unusual with the second purchased box, however, our small dog did on Sunday, 02-03-19 as she was acting very strangely sniffing up her nose highly toward the ceiling for the first time, picking up a scent our noses had not yet noticed. This continued. We thoroughly checked everything inside the house, but especially the kitchen and could not locate the source. Over the course of the following few weeks, we continued to closely monitor our dog's odd behavior and became very concerned what was going on. We ruled out many things regarding our dog and any electrical or burn odors in the kitchen. Late Tuesday night, 02-19-19, I ran our dishwasher after carefully pouring the powder into the dishwasher soap dispenser. Please note there are no known defects or issues regarding our dishwasher as it has been running normally. Also, there was no garbage odor we were detecting, only the strong chemicals from the dishwasher powder itself. We always rinse our dishes thoroughly before placing them inside the dishwasher. Early the next morning, I detected a very rare, strange and sickly 'fruity chemical' odor in our kitchen. I traced the smell and opened the dishwasher door which caused great eye, nose and throat irritation as well as nausea. It was an overwhelming feeling, making me feel suddenly sick. The multiple reaction symptoms required me to return to bed. Various circulating fans would not eliminate the sickening odor, so we unloaded the dishwasher and ran two separate cycles, the first being a cup of white vinegar and the second baking soda in the bottom of the empty dishwasher. After two full cycles of cleaning the dishwasher, thankfully the horrible odor was removed from it and the kitchen itself. My husband later bought more dishwasher powder from a different Wal-Mart store in Knightdale, NC. This time, another dishwasher detergent brand, but he reported smelling the same foul odor emitting from the Great Value Automatic Dishwasher Powder Original Scent while looking at dishwasher detergent products in the store aisle. From our house, we removed the unsafe box of Great Value Dishwasher Powder contained inside a plastic bag to our garage, saving it temporarily should it need to be inspected and tested for toxicity. Our dog is behaving normally again and has stopped her strange high nose to ceiling sniffing. I hope no other consumer has been affected and becomes ill by this product. There is definitely something wrong with this product!
