Incident Details
  • Incident Description: I purchased a Maytag electric double oven range Model MER6755AAB in October 2005. Yesterday we used the bottom oven: baking meat in a deep pan. The oven was on for over an hour and working fine, then the bottom coil of the bottom oven actually started flaming by itself, and the flame curled around on the coil, and then went out. There was no grease or food on the coil to burn. Nothing was dripping on to the coil. There was no food or grease on the bottom of the oven to catch fire. Had there been a shallow pan or anything near the coil, there would have been a big fire. The fire went out by itself; we shut off the oven. We restarted the oven, and the bottom coil would not heat up. There is rough corrosion on the coil where it was burning. The burnt area is not near the electrical connection. I have ordered a replacement part, which has not yet arrived. We're certainly not using the oven until the part has been replaced.
