Incident Details
  • Incident Description: I have a Maytag Gemini range with two ovens and 4 burners model MGR6772BDS SERIAL NUMBER 11347286CC. Yesterday, August 22 2014, the oven started clicking, the sound that the piezoelectric burner igniters make. No one was in the room and the oven had not been used in about 4 hours. As I a approached the kitchen, I saw orange flames coming up around the burner control knobs, followed by dense black smoke and the odor of burning plastic. I unplugged the over from the wall outlet. Today, after having no success on the Maytag website trying to get someone to inspect and repair the oven, I searched for recalls for this model and saw the CPSC website listing for this model and serial number and the reports of unsafe upper oven and flames. I called the 800 number and got the recall part of Maytag. I had a difficult time with them since they were not aware of all the recalls after being purchased by Whirlpool, but eventually I got someone who said they would send my information to an independent service company. I think this oven is a serious safety hazard. Even if repaired I would not trust it again, and I'm a bit concerned about the fumes that were released in the house while I went in to unplug the unit. My telephone number is [REDACTED]
