Incident Details
- Incident Description: Our son was wearing a MINECRAFT hoodie jacket from Target manufactured by JINX Poway ca. The hooded jacket represents a creature in minecraft called a CREAPER who chases people around. At recess today our 1st grade son was playing CREAPER with other children when he fell and bumped his head. The HOODIE on this jacket zips completely up like a halloween costume resulting in the hoodie of the jacket acting like a MASK with square black mesh eye holes to look through.
Unfortunately when the jacket and hoodie is completely zipped up it puts the ZIPPER directly in front of the person's forehead In addition there is an unusually long, sharp and metal MINECRAFT lettered emblem instead of the normal small rounded zipper pull that on most zippers. THis metal emblem acts like a KNIFE when impact pressure is applied on the forehead and the result is a very deep and unusual forehead intusion or cut that required 5 stitches. The cut looked deeper than expected to the urgent care surgeon. The surgeon quickly figured out what caused it when she looked at the Jacket zipper and its metal MINECRAFT emblem.
I will contact the company selling this product and ask they recall it voluntarily and or just replace the sharp metal minecraft emblem with a rubber or leather emblem instead. It's a great fun jacket for kids and even adults but this metal emblem is going to cause more cuts and or even eye injuries due to its location when zipped up.

Comments from the Manufacturer/Private Labeler
- We’ve received notification concerning a single incident report on a Minecraft fleece sample that we produced. The incident was in regards to a child who was playing chase with the hood fully zipped shut and fell at the wrong angle, which the consumer is assuming the head injury came from contact with the zipper puller. We’ve been utilizing this custom zipper puller for many years across multiple product categories and have never had this type of incident occur before. This garment is not a costume to be worn fully zipped during active play. We have reached out to the consumer and our partner Jinx has actually send them product to rectify the situation, we’ve also reached out to the consumer on Friday 1/27/17 but have have not received a reply to date. We are working for 2017 to change this zipper puller to a rubber format and potentially add a disclaimer sticker to the garment to warn users that the garment is not made to be fully zipper during playtime. We do all normal garment and zipper testing according to CPSIA standards, however impact testing is not part of this process as this is not an athletic garment to be worn fully zipped during sporting activities.
