Incident Details
  • Incident Description: The Scarpa Maestrale RS (Sold through 2016) Alpine Touring (AT) Ski Boot has a severe product defect in the ski/walk mode that endangers skiers while using the product. When performing normally, an AT ski-boot allows you to unlock or lock the flex to suit your purpose, whether skiing downhill or walking uphill. In the case of skiing downhill, a skier wants their boot to be locked, providing complete support through aggressive turns. The Scarpa Maestrale RS has a weak pin that is prone to rupturing mid run and dramatically affecting a skier's performance. In my case, this has occurred five times between both boots, and it's after the most recent occurrence that I've decided to contact you today. When the pin breaks, a skier's ankle support collapses and can often lead to a dramatic crash at speed. In my most recent case, the pin ruptured in the midst of a long, steep pitch of skiing in the backcountry. I somersaulted over sideways and was fortunate to self-arrest and prevent further falls. Scarpa offers pins for repair in high quantity, suggesting that this is in fact a known defect from their team, and rather than fix the product, they seek to put a band-aid on the fault until the next break. Their updated Maestrale RS boots have completely redesigned the ski/walk mode, again suggesting a known defect.
