Incident Details
- Incident Description: The gas range is a Maytag Gemini and is about 15 years old.
It was plugged in but turned off. No burners or oven were on. We heard the clicking sound of an igniter for about 5 seconds (igniters are used to create spark to light a particular stovetop burner). We then heard popping noises and smoke began to emanate from the stovetop on the right side of the range top by the burner controls. I opened the upper oven and there was fire visible to the right side through the clear lens for the oven interior light, again on the side proximal to the burner controls. I was able to move the range and unplug it; however the smoke continued. I had a fire extinguisher on hand, but the fire went out on its own after about 10 to 20 seconds. There was a distinct smell of an electrical fire in the room. I turned off the gas valve leading to the range. After 30 mins to be sure it do not reignite, I inspected the range by removing the back panel and lifting the top. Under the top where the burner controls are located one of the controls had charring of wires and soot from the fire. The insulating bracket around the oven also had charring or soot visible.
The images show the layout of the range and the specific controller that was burned. Charred wiring is visible as well as charring and soot in the surrounding area. The burner control is a combination of gas valve and electric components, presumably used to activate the igniter for that respective burner.
We were very fortunate to be home at the time or it could have potentially been destroyed by fire had the fire spread beyond the range itself. At home were also our three pets, plus a neighbors pet. I plan to dispose of the unit (not sell it) as it is clear fire hazard due to this incident of spontaneous ignition.
