Incident Details
  • Incident Description: I purchased a foam mattress from Amazon in 2017 that was imported by Dorel Home Industries, according to the mattress labels. I am filing this report because the mattress appears to be shedding fiberglass; this is a health concern and also a consumer product labeling concern. A photo of the mattress labels is attached with this message so you can see all of the import numbers and other information. This month, I moved houses and noticed that the carpet under my bed and the bottom of the mattress were covered in sparkling fibres that appear to be fiberglass. The labels on the mattress cover only indicate that the mattress contains polyurethane foam and the cover is 100% polyester, so this is very concerning. I have noticed recently that if, while changing the sheets, I touch the mattress with a dark cloth (or any clothing, it's just easier to see on darker fabrics), it comes up covered in sparkling fiberglass filaments that are nearly impossible to clean off of clothing, skin and other belongings. (image attached) Based on several news stories and a class action lawsuit against [REDACTED] et al, I find it curious that the presence of fiberglass is not listed on the label and I also find it concerning that these fiberglass filaments are leaching out of the mattress without removing the outer cover or using the mattress in any unusual way. I'm contacting you to see why fiberglass is not listed on the label as a content of the mattress or the knit of the mattress covers. I will need to throw this mattress away after using it for only 3 years because fiberglass is getting everywhere and I do not want to breathe it in as I sleep and risk health problems. I have had numerous (documented) health issues in the past year, which I am concerned may be related to breathing in fiberglass. Any help you can provide in this matter is much appreciated. I can provide video that better shows the fiberglass. Thank you. Sincerely,

Comments from the Manufacturer/Private Labeler
  • In order to meet US federal mattress flammability standards, many foam mattresses are constructed with a non-removable fire retardant knit barrier that includes glass fiber threads. Glass fiber threads in the barrier/inner cover are secured beneath the mattress cover and consumers are advised on the care labels to not remove the cover, and to spot clean only. The consumer provided images that corroborate the presence of the DO NOT REMOVE COVER label. The woven fire retardant sock is not considered to be a resilient fill material, and is therefor not declared on the law label. Over time, glass fibers may crack into smaller threads, but as the barrier is contained within the cover these fibers do not commonly leave the mattress. Most of the time when fibers are found outside the mattress, it is due to the consumer having opened or removed the outer cover.
