Incident Details
  • Incident Description: On Thursday, 1/13, I washed the removable zippered cover of our 4-year old Casper mattress, which then resulted in fiberglass covering our sheets and four loads of laundry I subsequently did. We didn't know we had an issue until the middle of the night when we woke up itching and discovered glittering shards of glass all over our sheets, which we had been sleeping in. Those four loads of laundry included my 3-month old daughter's cloth diapers, our clothes and towels. Our washer and dryer seem to be contaminated and continuing to deposit glass on other loads. We are unable to wash our clothes until we replace the washer and dryer, since it continues to deposit glass shards on our belongings. I have found fiberglass anywhere that our laundry touched, including our couch, coffee table, our bedroom rug, a quilt we lay our daughter down to play, and the route from the bedroom to the laundry, and all over the laundry room. We have thrown out anything unsalvageable, including our sheets and towels, and for the remaining items, we have been lint-rolling painstakingly. The glass on our belongings is one thing -- but it's another thing to know that microscopic fiberglass is floating in the air going into our infant's eyes and lungs. This is a safety issue. On the Casper website, they "recommend" spot cleaning the mattress topper but there is NO WARNING to not wash it completely. In addition, it should not be removable by zipper if this is a KNOWN ISSUE. I began contacting Casper on Friday, 1/14, but have had no meaningful response since then.
