Incident Details
  • Incident Description: On Tuesday, March14 I removed the cover of my 2016 Tuft and Needles mattress. The mattress said, cover not washable, do not remove, but it didn’t list any dangers and it had a zipper. I have two young sons (4.5 and 1) and I wanted to deep clean the mattress as the oldest has allergies and chronic night coughs. I remember reading on the T&N website that their mattresses do not contain fiberglass. I assumed it said don’t remove cause it might shrink in the wash but I was fine with trying. I removed the cover, washed and dried and put it back on. I was with my young son most of the day. I carried him and he even slept on me that same afternoon. That night when going into the room I noticed shiny things on my bed frame. They were also on my comforter and bookshelf. I panicked and moved my older son and husband who were already asleep on that bed. The next day my young son woke up with swollen red eyelids. :( I didn’t think of the fiberglass cause he slept in a different room. My mom took him to the doctor and they said he had pink eye as it’s been going around. She didn’t mention the fiberglass exposure. Later that day, while starting to clean, I realized he and I had the bulk of the exposure as our clothes were Covered in it! :( His sweatshirt was almost shinier than mine. I talked to the company and they offered me a new mattress. I’m upset my baby son was exposed to this. I’m worried what adverse affects this could have with him and my older son who has allergies. (Update: on Thurs my oldest son started coughing and we took him to the ER on Saturday as he was coughing so much he was throwing up.) We’re all staying with my mom while we slowly clean. The bulk of the fiberglass was in my bedroom. A little was tracked around the house. We had to throw out all my clothes and some of my husband’s as they were in drawers under my bed. We also got rid of our washer and dryer as they were Covered in fiberglass and kept shedding it. We have a list of all the things we had to throw out.
