Incident Details
- Incident Description: In December of 2017 I purchased a Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea 12 inch Mattress from Amazon. This mattress has a 10 year warranty, creating the expectation from me that the materials and supplies it was manufactured with would be safe and functional for that warranty period. I was fully aware that the mattress had a fire retardant fire sock inside that contained fiberglass and that the mattress cover should not be removed. At no point since I have purchased this mattress have I ever attempted to unzip, remove, or otherwise alter or open up the mattress cover. The mattress has been well cared for and has seen standard usage, for sleep at night but is otherwise untouched. The exterior cover at a glance does not visually show any signs of extreme wear, tears, openings, or any other type of large damage that could allow the fiberglass from the fire sock to escape. However, a few days ago I discovered small fiberglass particles on my bedframe, under my bed, on my sheets, pillows comforter, and nearby rug. Upon further inspection it appears that smaller fiberglass particles are breaking down and somehow escaping from the mattress cover. The mattress cover itself is covered in them. This will likely be hours of cleaning, and I’ve now been exposed to fiberglass without my knowledge. Over the past year I’ve been experiencing unexplained and novel skin and scalp sensitivity. I’ve tried different laundry soaps, shampoos, body washes, lotions, etc. to no avail. I now believe it is quite possible this sensitivity could be attributed to unintended and unknown fiberglass exposure over a long period of time as it slowly and unnoticeably escaped from the mattress cover, despite following ALL manufacturer recommendations and warnings. (Again, I have never removed or attempted to remove the mattress cover.) It should also be noted that I believe it is irresponsible and potentially dangerous that Zinus uses a zipper on their mattress cover. I recognize there are warning tags in place and measures to discourage opening the zipper, but, its a zipper. Consumers recognize zippers as a way to open things. Regardless, I have never opened the mattress cover and was still exposed to the fiberglass inside.
