Incident Details
- Incident Description: I recently purchased a Queen-size Siena Mattress on Amazon.com. Siena is a sub-brand of Resident Home, which manufactures the Nectar mattress. Upon setting up the mattress, I noticed a warning that said, 'Do not remove the zippers. Property damage, etc., can occur if zippers are removed.' It was something along those lines. I knew this mattress contained fiberglass as a fire retardant and had researched numerous articles stating it is safe as long as I don't remove the outer cover. I never removed the cover. After purchasing it, I started having a stuffy nose, and my cat began sneezing occasionally. I attributed this to seasonal changes. Occasionally, my skin itched, which I also thought was due to seasonal allergies. However, the new kitten my housemate adopted likes to run around the house. She went under my bed, and I saw crystal-like sharp material protruding from the bottom barrier of my Siena mattress. I immediately recognized it as fiberglass, having seen enough news and videos about it on social media. I used my phone's flashlight to inspect further and realized that fiberglass was poking through the barrier, with some fibers attached to the metal bed slats, etc. I also found these sharp materials on the fitted sheet, although not as much as on the bottom of my mattress. I contacted Siena but haven't heard back for a few days. They kept asking for my contact information but to no avail. I feel really frustrated. I've ordered a new mattress and will remove this one myself, hoping that Siena resolves the issue and arranges for its disposal. I know fiberglass is safe if the outer cover is well-reinforced, but it seems that's not the case with Siena's product. It appears to be a thin layer of rayon or polyester. It's frustrating that they continue using this material without diligent research and development, especially after class-action lawsuits concerning their sub-brand Nectar.
