Incident Details
- Incident Description: For an extended period, we have routinely utilized blenders for tasks such as grinding spices, making sauce, and juicing. After thorough consideration, we opted to invest in a Vitamix, specifically the Venturist V1200 model in Red, purchased from Costco on November 29, 2020. This blender variant is equipped with three different jars, all of which my wife and I use regularly.
On January 5, 2023, while my wife was grinding spices using the [REDACTED] (nut butter jar), an incident occurred. This particular jar requires proper screwing onto the base with the blade and should be mounted upside down in the blender. Failure to completely secure or mount the jar correctly prevents the blender from initiating the grinding process. Unfortunately, during the grinding process, the jar unscrewed itself from the base. In an attempt to prevent spills and avoid spraying spices, my wife attempted to secure the jar manually and stop the blender. However, the jar dislodged from the base, resulting in severe lacerations to her middle and ring fingers. The injury caused significant blood loss, immense pain, and dizziness.
Swift action was taken, and my wife was immediately taken to an urgent care facility where she received nine stitches to mitigate further blood loss. Despite being prescribed painkillers, she endured constant pain and disrupted sleep for several weeks. Subsequently, she underwent a procedure at [REDACTED] Hospital to remove the stitches and realign the tissues, as they were not properly positioned due to the substantial blood loss. It took an additional month for her to recover and regain the ability to use her right hand for basic activities. Since the incident, her right-hand ring finger has not functioned normally, and she experiences intermittent pain.
I am prepared to provide medical treatment records and doctor's findings as needed by your office. It is noteworthy that the product details indicate that if a jar is not mounted or screwed properly, the blender is designed to detect this and should not initiate its functioning.
