Incident Details
  • Incident Description: On 4/12/2024 I was standing in front of my kitchen sink and attempting to open a Thermos brand 16 oz thermos (the type that has a folding spoon that fits into the lid) when the thermos explosively decompressed through the top opening (with a loud bang) and the lid became a projectile. The force of the decompression ejected food from the thermos and launched the lid at high speed towards my kitchen sink, where the lid contacted the countertop edge and ricocheted back towards me to my immediate left, traveled an additional 8-10 feet before contacting a kitchen cabinet and ricocheting again onto the floor. Time elapsed from decompression to the time that the lid came to a rest was approximately one second.
