Incident Details
  • Incident Description: LG range child lock reset to unlocked state during brief power outage, causing a fire. The child lock had been set to prevent the burners from being turned on by the dog or othur kitchen activity. The front mounted knobs are incredibly sensitive and a light push will allow them to turn. Power went out briefly causing the child lock to switch off. Dog bumped into the knob shortly after the power outage while no one else was downstairs which turned a burner on. A plastic container of sugar near the burner melted onto the burner and caught fire, causing nearby items to also flame up. Fire was put out before it spread further into the kitchen. Since then the power outage reset issue has been replicated multiple times. If the child lock is set and the power goes out for even a second, the child lock turns off. If a burner knob is turned into an on position while the power outage resets the child lock, the burner will automatically come on when the child lock resets after the outage. The knobs are so sensitive that lightly leaning over the stove or bumping them with a cabinet door will push them in and turn them. The push to turn function offers very minimal resistance making it easy for them to be turned by accident. Both of these issues cause a fire risk and a safety hazard.
