Incident Details
  • Incident Description: The plastic screen cover on my KitchenAid dishwasher broke while opening and created a sharp surface for which an injury could easily occur. I was only slightly cut when this occurred, but now my dishwasher has a sharp protruding piece of plastic that can easily injure anyone opening or closing the dishwasher. The dishwasher was purchased in April 2022, installed in May 2022, and the incident occurred in January 2025 (Less than three years of use). I was using the dishwasher in its designed capacity and simply opening the door. After researching this failure online, this is a common issue with this dishwasher. KitchenAid refused to assist and informed me that the product is out of warranty. I have children that are able to reach this surface and could also be injured by this sharp piece of protruding plastic. I have since taped it down to protect against future injury, but now every time I open my dishwasher, the sharp plastic surface is exposed. The fact that this damage appears common for this model and it is a reasonably predicted failure mode would make me believe that this is a design defect that is known to KitchenAid.
