Incident Details
- Incident Description: 3 month old nearly suffocated from Snoo strap moving to around his neck after sliding forward in bassinet. The leg risers were installed due to instructions stating to use if baby is prone to spit up.
I woke up to the sound of my baby struggling and kicking. Thankfully I woke up and checked on him. Because he had slid down and the swaddle is designed to stay in place, the swaddle straps had moved over his neck. He was still breathing and conscious but unknown if he would have been had I not gotten up to check on him as soon as I heard him struggle.
We had not had any issues before this with the SNOO and had been using since birth.
My baby was NOT mobile at this time and NOT able to roll over. We have since stopped using this product and warned others who have it of this situation.

Comments from the Manufacturer/Private Labeler
- Happiest Baby, Inc.: The consumer reports that they placed leg lifters on SNOO to alleviate the baby’s spitting up. The consumer states they found the baby slid down into the SNOO sleep sack. The consumer did not report any breathing difficulties or other issues. There were no injuries and no need for medical care.
In response to Happiest Baby’s inquiry about the event, the consumer stated that the baby was struggling to move out of the sack, not struggling to breathe and the swaddle bands did not interfere with breathing. The consumer noted that they could have placed the swaddle’s inner bands too low when they positioned the baby in SNOO. The consumer confirmed that they continued to use SNOO without the leg lifters and with the newer sleep sack. Happiest Baby provided swaddling instructions to the consumer and requested that they send the swaddle back for review.
The SNOO sleep sack is intentionally designed with various safety features. For example:
- the sack is constructed so that, if a baby were to slide downward into the sack, the top of the sack would also move downward with the baby, preventing pressure on the neck
- the upper panel of the sack is made of a very open-weave mesh, so babies are easily able to breathe if their face is accidentally covered
- there is a limited amount of room between the baby’s feet and the bottom of the sack (and the bed) to minimize the distance a baby could move downward, and thus reduce the potential of face covering
- the inner band, made of soft stretchy fabric, goes all the way around the chest and arms to ensure that, if a baby is able to push the band upwards, the band’s circumference is much larger than a baby’s neck
- the sack has a band between the legs which attaches to the chest band and minimizes sliding into the sack
The SNOO leg lifters provide a slight and safe incline of 2.5 degrees, which is a fraction of the 10-degree elevation approved by federal guidelines and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The SNOO and the SNOO sleep sack have been thoroughly tested by independent safety engineers and meet all applicable safety regulations when used as directed. SNOO has been used for 800+ million hours and the company has not received reports - nor heard of reports - of significant infant injury, including injury related to face covering.
It is our opinion that the consumer’s report does not reasonably support a concern that the SNOO and its sleep sack present a product hazard.
