- Incident Description: I purchased the Sapphire 5 Sauna from Enlighten Sauna (www.enlightensauna.com).
In June of 2025 it malfuncitoned in a way that could have burned our house down.
Though the sauna was turned off/all lights were off, the coils stayed hot, and got hotter.
The next morning I went in and black was going up the walls of the sauna, and all interior fixtures made of plastic had melted. It was so hot it was off the thermometer in temp.
There was no way to turn it off, so I had to turn the fuse off to get it to stop.
They failed to honor the warrantee, blaming it on an aroma bowl accessory that I had never even used. An electrician verified it had nothing to do with the aroma bowl but with the thermostat and sensors. The [REDACTED] reached out to them after I reported this, and they failed to reply to the [REDACTED].
THEN, I had another sauna company [REDACTED]) look at it to see if they could repair it. They looked at our heater and said they wouldn't touch it because it's foreign, off brand, and not made for a US market/not "UL listed."
The rep from [REDACTED] said, "That might be why there's no fail safe on the sauna heater. It should have kicked off instead of staying on all night and possibly starting a fire".
I researched further and found that selling a sauna heater without a UL certification, or equivalent safety listing (like ETL), in the USA isn't strictly banned by federal law, but it's extremely risky and often illegal to install due to local electrical codes (NEC) and insurance issues, as these units lack verified compliance with safety standards like UL 875, posing serious fire/shock hazards and potentially voiding home insurance. Local inspectors (AHJs) and electricians often won't approve or connect unlisted equipment, making it a major hurdle for legal installation and use.
It had not been disclosed to us before buying, or after, that our heater was not made for the US Market and that it lacked these essential safety features.
Furthermore, Enlighten failed to disclose that their sauna lacked this fail safe when I reported to them that their Sauna almost burned our house down - and they denied our warrantee claim. We found all this out on our own.
I hope you can protect other consumers from this dangerous product and company.
