Incident Details
- Incident Description: A carbon monoxide alarm purchased from Amazon was installed and used in our home for safety monitoring. The product was intended to detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and sound an alarm to warn occupants.
On the day of the incident, there was a gas leak in the home that caused carbon monoxide to accumulate indoors. The alarm was installed and powered on as instructed and was located in the living area of the house. However, the device did not activate or sound any warning during the incident.
Because the alarm failed to alert us, the occupants of the home were exposed to carbon monoxide for an extended period of time without warning. Family members began experiencing symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide exposure, including dizziness and difficulty breathing. Emergency medical services were contacted and family members were transported to the hospital for treatment related to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
The product being used was a carbon monoxide alarm intended for residential safety monitoring. It was being used in a normal residential setting as a safety detector. At the time of the incident, the device did not provide any audible warning despite the presence of carbon monoxide in the home.
The failure of the alarm to activate created a serious safety risk and may have contributed to the injuries that occurred.
