Incident Details
  • Incident Description: I have a Casper Essential Full Mattress that I purchased in fall of 2017. It had a fire resistant "fire sock" that covers the mattress. This fire sock contains fiberglass, which is supposed to be securely encased so that it does not escape. However, after sleeping on the mattress for 6 years, I discovered that it has begun leaking fiberglass fibers. I had it kept in a waterproof anti-bedbug mattress protector for the last 3 years, which I removed on 10/2/2023 in order to wash it. Afterwards, I discovered fiberglass fibers all over my bedroom, and I realized that the fire sock has begun breaking down and that my mattress protector has previously been containing them. The surface of the mattress was covered in shiny strands poking out of it. There are a few injuries I've sustained as a result of this. My skin is very irritated from where it's been embedded with fiberglass, and even after cleaning I am constantly itchy. I breathed in fiberglass and have developed a sore throat, cough, and sneezing. My voice sounds rough, like I've been smoking (I have never smoked). I've also experienced eye irritation. In addition to the injuries, I have had to upend my entire bedroom to clean out the hazardous fiberglass. I've also had to throw away all of my bedding and much of my clothing. I am still in the process of cleaning up, but I may need to throw away some upholstered furniture in the room. Of course I am also getting rid of the mattress.
