Incident Details
- Incident Description: After product purchase and first use in May 2020, I had a severe asthma attack from the smell deriving form the footwarmer. I let the product sit in the garage for a 1.5 year and tried it again January 12, 2022 in the hope that the product was now 'seasoned.' But again after reuse, I had another severe asthma attack from the smell of the footwarmer after starting it only a few minutes. Note: I did not have an asthma attack for many years.
It appears the product is made from crumb rubber granulate (CRG) produced from end of life tires (ELTs).
According to the EPA, benzene, mercury, styrene-butadiene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and arsenic, among several other chemicals, heavy metals and carcinogens, have been found in tires. Studies have found that crumb rubber can emit gases that can be inhaled. CRGs contain chemicals such as benzene, which has been associated with leukemia, and another carcinogen known as trichloroethylene (TCE), a volatile organic compound that can affect the immune and central nervous systems, liver and kidneys. In addition to asbestos-related illnesses and various types of cancer, medical research has shown links between industrial toxins and respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); auto-immune conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, or sarcoidosis.
